If you buy one non-mandatory insurance in Germany, make it personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht). It covers you if you accidentally damage someone else's property or injure them, and in Germany you can be held liable for the full cost. It is cheap (often under 5 EUR per month), and many landlords and situations effectively expect you to have it.
We compared the most expat-friendly providers: Getsafe runs entirely in English through an app, and wefox and Feather add advisor support, while Feather brokers policies and handles the paperwork for you. All three let you sign up without fluent German.
How We Ranked Them
We weighted English-language service first (this is the whole point for a new arrival), then price, then how painless a claim is. Getsafe wins for most people: liability from around 3 EUR per month, a fully English app, and monthly cancellation so you are never locked in.
Note: Liability insurance (Haftpflicht) is different from household contents insurance (Hausrat) and legal insurance (Rechtsschutz). Start with liability. It is the cheapest, and the one that protects you from the largest bills.
